If we think of the healthcare in America as a patient, the patient is quite sick. The symptoms are over-regulation, over-utilization, fraud and abuse, an obsolete payment system, defensive practice due to fear of lawsuits and many other similar ailments described here.

Code blue is called to resuscitate the patient and the code team led by Dr.Politician, Congress, Insurance Industry and AMA rush in. Dr.Politician confers with his team for a few minutes and then, decides to call consultants. He calls Dr.Canada, Dr.Europe and other experts for a second opinion. He finally declares with a somber face that he has made a diagnosis. The patient is suffering from an acute deficiency of regulations and an overdose of fraud and abuse. He prescribes more regulations, leading to higher doses of the treatment that has failed so far, and the patient subsequently dies.

Is this what we want?

America is the most beautiful, most free, and most prosperous nation on the Earth because of the genius of the people and the freedoms that we enjoy. Our great achievements in science and medicine, highest worker productivity in the world and unprecedented wealth creation by any nation in the history of civilization are not the result of government intrusion and bureaucracy, but the result of the genius of the people performing at their best. Our healthcare institutions and the quality of care they deliver are unmatched anywhere in the world. The problem we face has nothing to do with the expertise and knowledge of our doctors or the compassion of our nursing care since these two aspects of our healthcare system are far superior to any other nation.

So who should solve the problem? The team, which killed the patient or the ‘Genius Patient’ himself? Remember, the Genius Patient consists of all of us 300 million Americans who have fought and won two World Wars, placed a man on the moon and are the owners and stewards of the finest healthcare that exists anywhere in the universe today. It is not only our duty and moral responsibility to take the matter into our own hands, but our nation’s future depends on it. If we let the patient die, eventually the nation, as we know it today will die. more details.

Despite the God given abundant talent and genius we have as Individuals, as far as the handling of our own health care goes, collectively we the Americans have behaved very passively and failed miserably to protect our interests. When we go to a grocery store or a department store we look at each item several times, touch it, feel it, and may still not buy it. Instead we may go to another store or online to check prices and compare them to find the best deal. Does anybody buy a car nowadays without checking KBB or CAR.COM? Why, then when it comes to our own health care do we act like inert objects (like a football in a ball game) and let others kick us any way they want to? Insurance companies, hospitals, government and sometimes-even doctors kick us around. Although nowadays doctors are being kicked around just as badly, if not worse. Click here for an answer.

How many of us know what is the cost or what should be the cost for the treatment of a sore throat, bronchitis, a bruised elbow, chest pain or a brain surgery? It may be complicated to determine this, but do we ever try to even find out or question the ‘system’? Well, the time has come to be an active player and to be a part of the team that will determine our fate rather than just be a bystander and get run over by the established interest groups and corrupt politicians.

This Is What A Genius Patient Should Do.

Be a responsible consumer and take full interest in understanding our own medical problems by interacting with your doctor and evidence based protocols from major medical institutions. Get a complete grasp of what treatment options are available and what is the cost. Click here
Demand to Reform the Payment System (click here) so we understand the cost to the penny.
Keep Control of our medical records with us. Click here
We should tell the Government what we want and not the other way around.
We demand the elimination of the pre existing condition clause. Any American who wants to should be able to purchase health insurance policy at a same rate any union member or congressman can get it.

What Should The Government Do?

In addition to staying out of micromanaging the healthcare, Government can do a great service by implementing the following:
Fund major prestigious medical institutions to establish evidence-based protocols and guidelines for disease management and treatment. Also sponsor a national system that is neutral and credible to give ratings to these protocols.
Fund a national system of networks so that each patient room in doctor’s offices and hospitals has a terminal to access these protocols.
Help the Genius of America to function freely and advance the medical knowledge to levels that no one else can reach. This process will keep prices of medical treatment the most competitive in the world and attract patients from other failed systems to our country leading to billions of dollars of a new source of revenue. We have the finest medical institutions and the best medical professionals that are the envy of the world, so make it easy for them to attract patients from all over the globe.
Consider tort reforms.

What Should The Doctors Do?

Where is your voice Doc? Aren’t you obligated to protect your patients? Remember the oath ‘Do No Harm’? Are you going to let this clueless politicians harm your patients?
Take a high road and get out of making profit from a strep test or a stress test. Society expects you to keep your profession ‘noble’ and will always pay you top dollars for your services. Demand a reformed payment system that is based on the level of medical education, experience, and tract record and not based on volume or the procedures. (Payment System) & (Final Answer)

Educate and inform patients with all aspects of their medical care including the cost.

Help the system eliminate over utilization, fraud and abuse of the resources.

What Should The Nurses Do?

No medical system is complete without the compassionate care of a nurse.
Nurses can be best friends of their patients.

Guide your patients to understand complicated medical problems and help them choose the best options available.

Help the system by pointing out fraud and abuse either by a provider or by a patient.
